• What is TEAM

The Eventing Association of Michigan (TEAM) is a registered not-for-profit organization created to promote the sport of eventing in our state. TEAM evolved from the Michigan Combined Training Association (MCTA), which was formed in the late 1970's by Bob Hutton to promote the sport among Michigan equestrians.

Throughout most of the early years, the lowest level offered was Training. Later, "Pre-Training" - eventually Novice - divisions were added. We now offer levels: Training, Novice, Beginner-Novice & Starter levels for the majority of our events.  Safety became a greater priority; protective gear such as helmets and chest protectors made their way into the rules, and cross country fences were replaced with solid obstacles with clear ground lines, many built by early MCTA member Eric Retford.

In 2001, the US Combined Training Association became the US Eventing Association (USEA), and so MCTA became The Eventing Association of Michigan - TEAM!

For those of you experiencing eventing for the first time, or if you just need a bit more information, you should take a look at our Get Started page, to learn a bit more about what you will need before you get into the Start Box.

  • Eventing Outside of TEAM

TEAM supports and recognizes a number of events within the state of Michigan, but it is independent from the United States Eventing Association (USEA), the national body for eventing in the US. Events sanctioned by USEA are known as "recognized" events; placings in these events count towards the national rankings and qualifications for the annual American Eventing Championships.

While all of Michigan's USEA-recognized events are recognized by TEAM, not all TEAM events are recognized by the USEA. Eligibility for USEA events and awards requires USEA membership*, which is separate from your TEAM membership.

Area 8 (along with Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and parts of Pennsylvania and Illinois). Area 8 offers programs for junior and adult riders, year-end championships, and annual awards.

*Note: Beginner novice level competitors who are not USEA members may enter USEA-recognized events by paying a non-member fee. Pre-beginner novice levels are not currently recognized by USEA and therefore no fee is required.
